The Poem Is Woven All Around: We live as weft threads: walking through landscapes over which we have both no control and over which we exert our influence. This is also how to make and live poetry. In this workshop we will read works by Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Marjorie Welish, and Kazim Ali as examples of texts possibly made through “tracking” experience across landscapes, including the landscape of language itself. With the words of these poets echoing in the space, we will segue to visual work, looking at the small, page-sized weavings of Sheila Hicks for inspiration, and then making weavings together using simple cardboard looms. This work activates the non-verbal parts of ourselves that understand patterning and repetitive handwork without needing to talk about it or name it or even plan it out ahead of time. We’ll then return to language and writing, making poems by mixing notebook jottings, newspaper information, other kinds of found text we may have brought with us in our bookbags, and overheard language. The weaving/poem happens when weft and warp are pressed together and patterned. Finally, we’ll talk about what happened and what each person can take for their future work: what are the possibilities for brand new forms, patterns, writings, poetics?

No prior visual art or poetry-writing experience needed; demos and materials provided. This is a multi-level workshop appropriate for new and experienced poets; we’ll benefit from beginner’s mind, as well the desire to push into a new poetics territory for those with experience.

The class runs for 3 hours and will be held in Chicago, at The Poetry Center of Chicago, 78 East Washington Street, Pedway East, Chicago IL 60602.

Class size is limited to 10 students. Register today to guarantee your seat.
